Orencia IV Infusion Therapy
What is Orencia?
Orencia (abatacept) is a biologic drug used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adults, polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in children aged 2 and older, and active psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in adults.
How does Orencia work?
Patients with these arthritic conditions have an immune system that mistakenly activates a chain of inflammatory cells that are thought to contribute to joint inflammation in RA. Orencia works by targeting the source of RA, called T cells, early in the inflammation process. Preventing T cell activation reduces the amount of signals that can be sent to other inflammatory cells, which is thought to reduce the signs and symptoms of RA conditions.
How is Orencia administered?
Orencia is available as an intravenous (IV) infusion. Doses are based on age and body weight. Orencia IV is approved for patients 6 years and older. Doses are given once every 4 weeks. Each infusion takes about 30 minutes. Orencia SC is approved for patients 2 years and older. Doses are given once every week.
