Remicade (infliximab) is a biologic drug therapy used to treat several moderate to severe autoimmune inflammatory conditions:
Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha is a protein in the immune system that helps regulate immune cells and inflammation in the body. Patients with one of the above conditions have bodies that produce too much TNF-alpha, which can cause the immune system to mistakenly attack cells in the digestive tract, joints, spine, and skin. The resulting inflammation is an underlying cause of the conditions listed above. Remicade reduces inflammation and symptoms of the above conditions by blocking TNF-alpha in the body.
Remicade is administered intravenously. The first 3 doses are administered once during week 0, 2, and 6, and then maintenance doses are administered once every 8 weeks thereafter. Each infusion takes about 2 hours.
