Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP)

ITP is a chronic autoimmune disorder that significantly reduces the levels of platelets (blood clotting cells) in the bloodstream. Symptoms include easy and excessive bruising, bleeding from the gums or nose, superficial bleeding into the skin that appears as pinpoint reddish-purple spots on the lower legs (purpura), blood in urine or stools, and unusually heavy menstrual flow. If injured, an ITP patient could bleed for a long time.
